In feng shui, the front door is called the "Qi Kou" (energy mouth), the primary channel for air and energy exchange between a home and the outside world. Auspicious energy enters through the door, and stale energy exits through it as well. Therefore, the door's location and orientation are believed to have a decisive impact on the home's fortune.
From a modern scientific perspective, the front door is an important source of natural light and ventilation for a home, directly affecting indoor air quality and residential health. This aligns with feng shui's emphasis on energy flow exchange.
The front door is also the "face" of a home, reflecting the owner's social status and economic strength. A clean, dignified entrance area can attract good luck and leave a good impression on visitors.
The ideal location for the front door is centered at the front of the home, which allows energy to flow evenly into all rooms. If the door is centered, the entry path will align with the home's central axis, creating a stable energy flow.
The door should face an open environment. Doors facing mountains or water are considered favorable; doors facing direct roads, sharp-cornered buildings, temples, or graves are considered unfavorable. In modern urban environments, facing other buildings' doors or windows is also considered less ideal.
The door height should be moderate. A too-small door appears stingy and oppressive, affecting wealth and development; a too-large door appears overly ostentatious and doesn't gather energy well. The recommended proportion is roughly twice as tall as wide.
If the front door directly faces a window, it creates "Chuan Tang Sha" (piercing through energy), causing energy to flow straight through without lingering, which is unfavorable for energy retention. Solutions include: placing a screen, foyer, or large green plant between door and window; using door curtains or bead curtains; placing auspicious objects like Pixiu or Money Frog inside the door.
If the front door directly faces another door, treatment is also needed. You can hang a door curtain or hang a convex mirror or Bagua mirror on the wall between the two doors.
Elevator doors facing the front door is common in modern apartments. The elevator's up-and-down movement causes frequent energy disturbance, believed to affect home fortune. You can place a screen or tall indoor plant inside the door to alleviate this.
The entrance area should be kept clean and unobstructed, without clutter or garbage. A cluttered environment blocks energy flow and affects fortune. Shoe cabinets should have doors, not be left open, as odors can enter the home.
You can place a doormat at the entrance, but it should be kept clean. Some people place Five Emperor Coins or cinnabar under the doormat to enhance the effect of dispelling negative energy, but the most important thing is keeping the doormat itself clean.
Lighting is important for the entrance area. A bright entrance can attract positive energy. It's recommended to install adequate lighting above or on both sides of the door. Motion-sensor lights are a common choice in modern homes, convenient and energy-efficient.
Thresholds traditionally have the function of gathering energy and preventing energy loss through the bottom of the door. A properly sized threshold can help block negative energy, but shouldn't be too high to affect daily passage.
Doormat color should match the door's orientation: red or purple for south-facing doors; blue or black for north-facing; green for east-facing; white or gold for west-facing. But more importantly, the doormat should be kept clean.
Placing a doormat at the entrance is practical, but coins, talismans, etc. should not be placed underneath. These items should be placed in more important locations inside the home, such as the living room wealth position.
