How BaZi Is Used in Feng Shui Planning

What people call feng shui is not one method. Three of its branches take entirely different inputs. 形法 reads the form around a building — the shape of the plot, where roads and water sit, what points at the door. 八宅 reads the occupant, specifically the birth year and sex, and converts them into a 命卦. 玄空飛星 reads the building, specifically its construction period and its facing, and draws a star chart from those two numbers.

Only one of the three involves a person. So when a practitioner says they will combine BaZi with feng shui, what they usually mean is that they will use 八宅 — and 八宅 does not use the Day Master, the ten gods, or the favourable element. It uses the birth year and nothing else from the chart.

That distinction matters because the three systems can disagree, and there is no rule in any of them for settling the disagreement. A compass bearing can be favourable under 八宅 and hostile under the chart's element logic in the same room.

The 八宅 calculation is short enough to check by hand. Take the last two digits of the birth year as a number. For a male, subtract from 100; for a female, subtract 4. Divide by 9 and keep the remainder, counting a remainder of 0 as 9. The remainder is a 洛書 number, and each number is one trigram.

A birth in 1990 gives 100 − 90 = 10, remainder 1, which is 坎 — an east-group 命卦. The same year for a female gives 90 − 4 = 86, remainder 5, which is assigned to 艮 — a west-group 命卦. One birth year, two people, opposite groups. That is enough to explain why a single household recommendation like everyone should face south cannot be right in the system's own terms.

Three conventions sit underneath this and they are worth knowing before trusting any calculator. The year boundary is 立春, not 1 January, so a January birth may belong to the previous year. The formula changes for births from 2000 onward, which is why two apps can disagree about the same person. And a remainder of 5 has no trigram of its own, so it is assigned to 坤 for males and 艮 for females.

八宅 produces a verdict per direction: for each 命卦, four of the eight directions are classed as favourable and four as not. The chart produces a verdict per element: which of the five is short, which is surplus, and which one the reading treats as useful. Directions and elements are not the same axis, and the two systems were built for different questions.

This is why the combination produces contradictions that neither text resolves. A direction can be marked unfavourable by the 命卦 and simultaneously be the direction associated with the element the chart is short of. There is no arbitration rule, because the two methods never shared a theory of what a direction does.

Practitioners handle this in one of three ways, and it is worth asking which one you are getting. Some rank 八宅 above the chart. Some rank the chart above 八宅. Some quietly drop whichever produces the less convenient answer, which is not a method at all.

The 飛星 branch is often described as personalised, and it is not. It divides time into twenty-year 運: the cycle used today starts with 一運 in 1864, and 2024 opened 九運, which runs to 2043. It then takes the building's facing direction on the 24-mountain ring and generates a nine-palace chart from the 運 number and the facing.

Every occupant of the same flat gets the same chart. Two people born forty years apart, with opposite Day Masters, receive identical star placements, because the birth data never enters the calculation.

So a service advertised as combining your chart with a flying-star reading is a modern composite. Each part can be done properly, but the join is the practitioner's invention rather than a procedure inherited from either system.

Before any of this, a room is decided by things that can be measured. Function: what has to happen in the space, by how many people, at what hours. Light: which way the windows face and how much direct sun arrives in summer. Air: whether ventilation works with the windows shut. Circulation: whether a wheelchair, a pram, or a delivery box can pass. Sound: what the neighbours and the street contribute. And the constraints that cannot be argued with — lease terms, load-bearing walls, egress routes, listed-building rules.

None of these are feng shui claims. They are the conditions under which any layout has to work, and they outrank symbolism because they fail in ways people can see.

Take a resident with 庚午 丁亥 乙酉 辛巳, born 16 November 1990, whose reading calls water favourable. The flat is a basement conversion with a persistent damp patch on the north wall and visible mould behind a wardrobe.

A consultant who starts from the chart adds a fountain and blue accents in the north, because north is water and water is the favourable element. Nothing about the mould changes. The resident now has more humidity and an electrical appliance standing on a damp floor.

Worked in the other order, the same case reads differently. The damp is a building defect: it needs the gutter, the external drainage, and the ventilation checked, and the mould needs removing. Water symbolism comes last, if at all, and in a damp basement the honest version of the tradition is that water is already over-supplied in the room — which is an argument against the fountain, not for it.

It can give a household a shared vocabulary for talking about a space, and it can add a preference layer on top of decisions that were already sound. Those are real benefits and they cost nothing to acknowledge.

It cannot diagnose a building, decide whether a room is healthy to sleep in, or produce an outcome that could be measured against a control. The chart is not a survey instrument, and the compass is not a building inspector. Where the two conflict with physics, physics wins, and any reading that says otherwise has stopped being a reading.
