Your personal gua indicates which room sectors are most compatible. This guide helps you choose and optimize rooms in any home layout.

Room selection based on personal Gua

In Eight Mansions feng shui, the location of each room within the home relative to the eight compass directions determines its energetic quality for each occupant. By understanding your Ming Gua number, you can identify which rooms in your home are most supportive for you and which rooms may present challenges. This knowledge helps in choosing bedrooms, home offices, and activity spaces that align with your personal energy.

How room location affects occupants

Each of the eight sectors of a home carries a specific energy based on the home's sitting direction. When you overlay your personal Ming Gua directions on the floor plan, some rooms naturally fall in your auspicious sectors and others in your inauspicious sectors. A bedroom in your Sheng Qi sector supports success and vitality. A bedroom in your Jue Ming sector drains energy and can cause health problems. The same room that is excellent for one family member may be challenging for another, depending on their Ming Gua.

The master bedroom priority

The master bedroom should ideally be located in the Sheng Qi or Yan Nian sector of the primary earner. If both partners have different Ming Gua numbers, choose a sector that is auspicious for both or at least not inauspicious for either. The northwest sector is traditionally the master bedroom location as it represents the patriarch. The southwest sector represents the matriarch. However, personal Ming Gua compatibility should take precedence over traditional sector assignments.

Choosing bedrooms for children

Each child should ideally have a bedroom in one of their auspicious sectors. Tian Yi supports health and is especially important for young children or those with health concerns. Fu Wei supports calm and focus, making it ideal for school-age children who need to study. Yan Nian supports social development and emotional balance. If siblings must share a room, place the room in a sector that is neutral or favorable for both, and orient each bed to the child's individual auspicious direction.

The home office location

The home office should be located in the Sheng Qi or Tian Yi sector of the person who uses it most. Sheng Qi supports career success, business growth, and financial prosperity. Tian Yi supports healing-related work, counseling, and health professions. If the office is used by multiple family members, place it in a sector that is at least neutral for everyone. The office should not be in the Jue Ming or Wu Gui sector of the primary user, as this can lead to career obstacles and workplace conflicts.

Room selection for elderly family members

Elderly family members benefit most from bedrooms in the Tian Yi sector for health, or Fu Wei for peace and stability. The room should be easily accessible, preferably on the ground floor, with good natural light and ventilation. Avoid placing elderly family members in rooms located in the northwest sector if they are not the family patriarch, or in rooms with heavy annual star afflictions. The southwest sector is traditionally associated with the matriarch and is suitable for elderly women.

What to do with unfavorable rooms

If a bedroom or frequently used room falls in an inauspicious sector, several remedies can help. First, orient the bed or desk to a personal auspicious direction. Second, use the five-element cycle to weaken the room's negative energy. Third, minimize time spent in unfavorable rooms. Fourth, enhance the room with auspicious symbols, colors, and objects. Fifth, consider repurposing the room: a guest room, storage, or utility room in an unfavorable sector has less impact than a master bedroom.

The kitchen and bathroom locations

The kitchen should ideally be in an inauspicious sector for the household, as the stove's fire energy "burns away" negative energy. However, the stove itself should face an auspicious direction for the primary cook. Bathrooms should also be in inauspicious sectors, as their draining energy symbolically removes negative influences. Having a kitchen or bathroom in your Sheng Qi sector is considered unfavorable. If this is the case, keep the kitchen clean and well-organized, and always close the bathroom door.

Room selection when renting or in apartments

When renting, you may have limited control over room selection. Focus on what you can control: bed orientation, desk placement, and use of remedies. If the only available bedroom is in an inauspicious sector, compensate with careful bed orientation, use of appropriate colors and elements, and intention-setting. The bedroom should be the most protected space, so prioritize its feng shui over other rooms. If the apartment layout is severely unfavorable, consider it as a factor in your next housing decision.

Room selection and the Flying Stars

Room selection should be evaluated alongside the Flying Star chart. A room in your Sheng Qi sector that also has favorable Flying Stars is ideal. A room in your Sheng Qi sector with unfavorable Flying Stars may not deliver the expected benefits. The Flying Star chart provides the time-sensitive energy overlay. A room that is currently productive may become less so when unfavorable annual stars visit. Review room assignments annually with the Flying Star chart update.

The psychological impact of room selection

Beyond the energetic calculations, room selection has a psychological impact. A room that feels right — with good light, comfortable proportions, and a pleasant view — supports well-being regardless of its technical feng shui rating. Conversely, a room that is technically auspicious but feels uncomfortable is unlikely to deliver its full benefits. Use room selection principles as guidelines, not rigid rules. The best room for you is one where you feel safe, comfortable, and at peace.

Creating a personal room map

To create a personal room map, draw your floor plan and overlay the eight compass directions. Mark each room with its sector. Then calculate your Ming Gua and identify which rooms fall in your auspicious and inauspicious sectors. Prioritize the rooms where you spend the most time: bedroom, office, and living areas. Use this map to make informed decisions about room assignments, furniture placement, and feng shui adjustments. Review and update the map when you move, renovate, or when family members change.
